Extracurriculars
GSU
Graduate Student Union (GSU) is a studnet body that does the union dues as research assistants / employees at MIT. Its one of the first groups that you meet when your oriented because they are such a big part of how governance is done within MIT.
Events at the Media Lab
StudCom
StudCom is an anomoly of the Media Lab. It’s a student run organization that creates Media Lab wide events such as 99 fridays, as well as others. Its the most active Media Lab student organization. It doesn’t really have a head of the organization that you see in other organizations here, almost like a hydra. If a head dies, another couple spew out. Writing this shows how culty this really is haha.
99 Fridays
99Fridays is one of the most unexplained events in the Media Lab, but is still an event that still occurs regularly. Run by StudCom (Student Comittee), its basically an event run by people at the Media Lab, for the Media Lab (and others), and from the Media Lab.
Hackerspaces
How to make almost anything is a great way to get into The Mars Lab at the Media Lab.
It’s really a wonderous place, and as of writing this, it is run by Dan, our shop daddy. It houses all of the 3D printers / SLA printers / laser cutters / 6 Axis machines / shopbots.
Places to Eat
Really, there isn’t much to eat around the Campus, and I regularly just bring my food from home because I am broke.
But some days you just have to grind and you don’t have the time to, so here are some Be in mind, most of its really just like different types of bowls and grewl
- Chipotle, you can get for around $10ish dollars for a chicken bowl
- CAVA
Coffee
- Tatte ()
IAP
IAP is basically a time between the Fall and Spring semester where you have no classes, can kinda chill and do research, while taking some classes that aren’t too serious
Some of the notorious ones include
- BattleCode
- Pokerbots
- Nuts and Bolts Entreprenuership (which was rated one of the top 10 best business classes to take)
- MAS Deep into the Lab
- Intro to Deep Learning
Some of the classes like BattleCode or Pokerbots really do take alot of time if you want to invest alot into it, but also have awards you can win for, and are sponsored by many different companies
Its also a great way to get a refresher into a course if you were like me, and wasn’t really a computer science major to be able to take undergraduate courses.
If you want to know a little bit more about what it is to take these classes, some of the grad blogs that are showcased here, here, and here.
Personally, I took intro to mas
