Algorithmic Couture
Zero waste fashion through computational design
Automating the creation of zero waste fashion patterns and digitizing traditional haute couture techniques.
Algorithmic Couture is a revolutionary project that automates the creation of zero-waste fashion patterns and digitizes traditional haute couture techniques to create customized, ethical fashion garments.
Through a unique collaboration between fashion designers, machine learning engineers, and digital fabrication specialists, the project aims to transform the fashion industry’s production system for a more sustainable future.
Core Concepts
The project is built upon three fundamental pillars:
- Sustainability - Changing a polluting industry through zero waste fashion design that eliminates fabric waste during garment production
- Digitization - Digitizing traditional haute couture techniques into parameters for an automated digital fabrication production system
- Customization - Mass customization of bespoke garments, enabling co-creation with customers through parameter-based designs generated from their body data
Project Evolution
Algorithmic Couture has evolved through several iterations, each advancing the integration of computational design with fashion:
Alpha (2018)
The initial proof-of-concept demonstrating the potential of algorithmic pattern generation for zero-waste garments. This version established the fundamental workflow: body scanning → algorithmic pattern generation → digital fabrication → garment assembly.
Beta (2019)
Enhanced version with improved pattern optimization algorithms and better integration of body measurement data. The beta version showcased at AnyTokyo 2019 featured more sophisticated garment designs and improved fit accuracy.
Chimera (2019)
Advanced iteration combining multiple pattern generation algorithms to create hybrid garments with zero waste. The Chimera version introduced AI-driven aesthetic decisions, allowing the system to balance sustainability constraints with design appeal.
Technical Implementation
The system combines cutting-edge technologies:
- 3D Body Scanning: Captures precise body measurements as input data
- Computational Pattern Generation: Uses genetic algorithms and optimization techniques to create zero-waste patterns
- Digital Fabrication: Laser cutting and CNC machines cut patterns with millimeter precision
- Machine Learning: AI algorithms optimize patterns for both zero waste and aesthetic quality
- Parameter-driven Design: Customers can adjust design parameters for personalized garments
