Alternative Kyoto
Rediscovering tradition through contemporary digital art
A curated art project introducing alternative perspectives on Kyoto culture through digital installations and artistic interventions.
Alternative Kyoto is a curated art project that introduces alternative perspectives on Kyoto culture through digital installations and artistic interventions. The project reimagines Japan’s ancient capital by overlaying contemporary digital art practices onto its rich historical tapestry.
About Alternative Kyoto
Alternative Kyoto transforms traditional perceptions of Kyoto as a purely historical city by presenting it as a living laboratory for contemporary digital art. The project brings together artists, technologists, and curators to create interventions that bridge the gap between ancient traditions and modern technologies.
Alternative Kyoto 2020: Artspace Light
The 2020 edition, curated by Studio Abacus, featured “Double Horizon” as a centerpiece installation at Motoise Kono Shrine in Amanohashidate. The exhibition explored themes of perception, landscape, and the intersection of natural and digital worlds.
Double Horizon Installation
Double Horizon transformed the sacred grounds of Motoise Kono Shrine into a meditation on perception and reality. The installation used fog screen technology to create floating text messages that appeared to exist between two horizons - the physical landscape of Amanohashidate and the ethereal realm of the shrine.
